The Howick Local Board has been considering its response to the two options being considered by Auckland Council to meet central government’s latest requirements for intensification. Maps of the options are available here. To their credit, the Board postponed their final deliberations on the subject in order to hear from the community, and allocated 10 speaking slots of 3 minutes each to the public.

CBRRA’s submission covered:

• Proposed zoning, including a suggestion that reduced the proposal for Terrace Housing and Apartment Buildings around the Howick Village that appeared in both options by replacing this with some intensification around Meadowlands. This was included in the second option being debated.

• Infrastructure capacity and upgrading costs

• Qualifying Matters (essentially restrictions on future development where there is insufficient infrastructure capacity to service new developments. These existed under an earlier intensification proposal by mysteriously vanished without any capital works being undertaken to upgrade capacity.

• A need to ensure the viewshafts from Stockade Hill and the Glebe are retained.
